Sewerage Maintenance

Overview

The Sewerage Maintenance scheme is intended for all contractors and water & sewerage company employees who work on the maintenance of drainage and sewers, undertaking tasks such as water jetting or CCTV investigation of blockages.

In October 2011 the ownership within England and Wales of private sewers and laterals transferred to the ten water and sewerage companies. The exception to this was pipework within a property boundary, connecting a single property to drains or laterals. This transfer ended a complex system which made it unclear where water company responsibilities started, and will allow the wastewater network to be managed more effectively. Further information about the transfer and its implications can be found on the Water UK website.

Energy & Utility Skills was approached to work with the water companies and representatives of drainage and sewerage contractors, both large and small, to look at the possibilities of a registration scheme. The aim of the scheme is to provide contractors with a method of demonstrating to the water & sewerage companies the training and assessment they have received. The learning and assessment is aligned to national standards.
