Gas Network Operations
Scheme Overview
The Gas Network Operations (GNO) National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is now registered under Network Construction Operations (Gas) (NCO(G)).
GNO was launched in 2003 to replace the Gas Distribution (GD) registrations that had been common in the gas industry for many years. GD was commonly an in-house training course which required no assessment after training and therefore could not be used to denote competence. GNO is a NVQ and combines classroom learning with work based training and assessment to ensure that operatives have the necessary skills and experience to operate on the gas network safely and efficiently. Since 2003 it has been the industry standard qualification for new and existing operatives alike.

GNO is available in the following categories:
| GNO Category | New NCO(G) Category |

The mains laying category is subdivided for purposes of registration into various pipe size categories. An operative may be registered for whichever levels they have been trained and assessed on. The GNO qualification can be used to train operatives on pipes up to 355mm, however training providers may train and assess on pipe sizes larger than this and issue an in-house certificate showing this.
With the exception of the trainee category all GNO registrations are valid for five years from the date of City & Guilds certification.
If a GNO registration has expired please visit the Re-Registration of Gas Network Operations page.
How do I get an Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) card?
Registration is based on the successful completion of the GNO NVQ at the appropriate level. The length of time taken for training and assessment will vary depending on the qualification undertaken and the prior skills and knowledge held by the individual concerned. All registrants must hold a valid Utility SHEA (Gas) or valid Gas Network Safety Passport (GNSP).
Individuals new to the gas industry may be registered with NCO(G) Trainee status for one year as an interim measure to allow them access to site to complete the work based learning and assessment.
Training is delivered through a network of City & Guilds accredited centres including independent training providers and some colleges. Although the GNO NVQ may be completed independently it is important that a candidate has the support of their employer in order to facilitate the work based learning and assessment process. A list of known training providers is available here.
